Moab

Moab was a nation east of the Jordan River descended from Lot, Israel's neighbor with a complex relationship marked by opposition and eventual inclusion in God's plan of redemption.

Overview

Moab originated from Lot's incestuous relationship with his daughter after the destruction of Sodom (Genesis 19:37). Throughout Israel's history, Moab alternated between hostility and cooperation with God's people, yet God demonstrated mercy even toward this nation, as exemplified in the story of Ruth the Moabitess who became an ancestor of King David and ultimately of Christ.

Key Scriptures

"And the younger, she also bore a son and called his name Ben-ammi; he is the father of the Ammonites to this day" (Genesis 19:38, ESV).

"These are the words of the covenant that the Lord commanded Moses to make with the people of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant that he had made with them at Horeb" (Deuteronomy 29:1, ESV).

"Now Naomi had a relative of her husband's, a man of standing of the clan of Elimelech, whose name was Boaz" (Ruth 3:11, ESV)—Ruth was a Moabitess who found grace and redemption.

Application

Remember that God's grace extends beyond national and ethnic boundaries, and that He can bring blessing and redemption even through those considered outsiders to His covenant people.
