Millo

Millo was a fortified structure or tower in Shechem that served as a stronghold during the time of the judges. It became the site of a tragic incident involving Abimelech and the people of Shechem.

Overview

Millo (meaning "filling" or "rampart") was a fortification associated with Shechem during the period of the judges. It served as a defensive structure and gathering place for the citizens of Shechem. The account of Millo illustrates the consequences of political ambition and the judgment of God upon wickedness.

Key Scriptures

"Then all the men of Shechem and all Beth-millo assembled together and went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar in Shechem" (Judges 9:6, ESV).

"Then he said to Abimelech, 'Let your sword do its work.' So Abimelech took his axe in his hand and cut down the branch, and carried it on his shoulder and said to the men who followed him, 'What you have seen me do, do quickly.' And all the men likewise cut down each his branch and followed Abimelech, and piled them against the stronghold, and set the stronghold on fire over them; thus all the men of the tower of Shechem also died, about a thousand men and women" (Judges 9:48-49, ESV).

Application

Remember that God judges unrighteousness and protects His people; trust in His sovereignty rather than in human schemes for power.
