Overview
The mile (Latin: mille passus, "thousand paces") was a standard Roman measurement of distance. In the first century, Roman soldiers could compel civilians to carry their gear for one mile, a practice that prompted Jesus to teach about responding with grace and generosity beyond legal obligation.
