Study Notes — Matthew 5
7 sectionsMatthew 5 contains the opening section of Jesus' most famous sermon, the Sermon on the Mount. Here, Jesus establishes the character and values of His kingdom through the Beatitudes, then systematically deepens God's Law by addressing not merely outward actions but the inward attitudes of the heart. This chapter reveals that genuine discipleship requires a righteousness far exceeding mere external compliance—one that transforms us from the inside out and calls us to love and holiness that reflect our Father in heaven.
Jesus sees the crowds and withdraws to a mountain, where His disciples gather close to hear Him teach. This deliberate positioning echoes Old Testament scenes of divine instruction (think of Moses receiving the Law on Mount Sinai). The phrase "he opened his mouth, and taught them" signals the gravity and formal solemnity of what follows. Jesus positions Himself as a teacher of ultimate authority, and His disciples—along with the crowd—are privileged to receive direct instruction.
The Beatitudes are declarations of blessing upon those who embody certain spiritual qualities. "Blessed are the poor in spirit" (v. 3) means those who recognize their spiritual bankruptcy apart from God—their desperate need for Him. These inherit the kingdom of heaven, the first and last of the beatitude promises. "Those that mourn" (v. 4) likely refers to those who grieve over sin—their own and the world's brokenness—and will receive God's comfort. The meek (v. 5) are the humble and gentle, who will inherit the earth, inheriting God's promises. Those who hunger and thirst after righteousness (v. 6) pursue holiness with passionate intensity and will be satisfied. The merciful (v. 7) receive mercy in return. The pure in heart (v. 8) will see God—a promise of intimate relationship with Him. Peacemakers (v. 9) are called God's children because they reflect His reconciling nature. Finally, the persecuted (v. 10) inherit the kingdom.
Application: These beatitudes reverse worldly values. True blessing comes not from wealth, power, or comfort, but from spiritual humility, moral seriousness, and living counter-culturally for Christ.
Jesus directly addresses His disciples, promising that when they are reviled and falsely accused for His sake, they should rejoice. Their suffering aligns them with the prophets of old and assures them of a great reward in heaven. This is not masochism but kingdom perspective—suffering for Christ's name is an honor and evidence of genuine discipleship.
Disciples are salt (preservative and flavor) and light (revelation and guidance) in a decaying world. Salt that loses its saltiness is worthless; similarly, believers who compromise their witness are useless to God's kingdom. Light hidden is light wasted. Our good works, visible before others, should point them to glorify our Father in heaven—not to exalt ourselves.
Jesus clarifies that He has not come to abolish the Law or Prophets but to fulfill them (v. 17). Every detail matters; not a jot or tittle shall pass away until all is fulfilled (v. 18). Those who break and teach others to break even the least commandment will be called least in the kingdom, while those who do and teach them will be called great (v. 19). Verse 20 is critical: our righteousness must exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees—not merely external obedience, but transformed hearts.
Jesus presents six cases where He deepens the Law's meaning: murder (vv. 21-26) is rooted in anger; adultery (vv. 27-30) begins in lustful thought; divorce (vv. 31-32) violates God's intent; oaths (vv. 33-37) should give way to truthfulness; retaliation (vv. 38-42) should yield to generosity; hatred of enemies (vv. 43-48) must transform into love. Each teaching exposes the heart's condition and calls disciples to radical obedience and Christlike character.
Matthew 5 challenges modern believers to examine not just our behavior but our hearts. Are we pursuing inward transformation, or merely outward conformity? Does our faith produce genuine love for enemies, radical generosity, and humble submission to God's kingdom? Jesus calls us to a righteousness that transcends rule-keeping—one rooted in love for God and neighbor, reflecting the character of our perfect Father in heaven.
