Overview
Methusael appears in the genealogy of Cain in Genesis 4, serving as a link between the early descendants of Adam's first son and the later antediluvian world. His name means "man of God" or "whom God sent," though little else is revealed about his life or character in Scripture. He fathered Lamech, who would become known for his violent boasting and his own descendants who developed various crafts and technologies in the pre-flood world.
Key Scriptures
"Mahujael fathered Methusael, and Methusael fathered Lamech" (Genesis 4:18, ESV). This verse places Methusael in the genealogical line descending from Cain, spanning the generations between Adam and the flood.
Application
Though Methusael's life is recorded only in genealogy, his existence reminds us that God sovereignly numbered the days of all people and knew each generation's place in His redemptive history, even those whose names appear briefly in Scripture.
