Overview
Meribah appears twice in Israel's wilderness journey. The first occurred at Rephidim early in the exodus (Exodus 17), where thirsty Israelites complained against Moses. The second happened at Kadesh near the end of the wilderness period (Numbers 20), where the people again demanded water. Both incidents revealed Israel's lack of faith in God's faithfulness and resulted in divine judgment.
Key Scriptures
"Therefore he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, 'Is the Lord among us or not?'" (Exodus 17:7, ESV)
"These are the waters of Meribah, where the people of Israel quarreled with the Lord, and through them he showed his holiness." (Numbers 20:13, ESV)
Application
When facing trials and uncertainty, believers should remember God's proven faithfulness rather than questioning His presence and provision, avoiding the sin of testing Him through faithless complaining.
