Merari

Merari was one of the three sons of Levi and the founder of the Merarite clan, who served important functions in the tabernacle worship during Israel's wilderness wanderings.

Overview

Merari was the third son of Levi (Genesis 46:11) and became the patriarch of the Merarite family line within the Levitical priesthood. The Merarites were assigned specific responsibilities in transporting and maintaining the structural components of the tabernacle, including its boards, bars, pillars, sockets, and pins (Numbers 3:36-37).

Key Scriptures

"These were the families of Levi: the family of the Libnites and the family of the Shimeites. These are the families of the Merarites, numbering 6,200 males from a month old and upward" (Numbers 3:33-34, ESV).

"As for the tents and all their equipment and all the service connected with them, the sons of Merari shall do all that service under the direction of Ithamar son of Aaron, the priest" (Numbers 3:35, ESV).

Application

The Merarite assignment reminds believers that all service in God's kingdom—whether visible or behind-the-scenes—carries equal importance and dignity when performed faithfully unto the Lord.
