Merab

Merab was the eldest daughter of King Saul who was promised to David but ultimately given to another man, illustrating the consequences of broken promises and unfaithfulness.

Overview

Merab was Saul's firstborn daughter (1 Samuel 14:49). King Saul initially promised her to David as a reward for his valor in battle, but later gave her to Adriel the Meholathite instead. This broken promise revealed Saul's jealousy and instability, contrasting with David's faithful character.

Key Scriptures

"Saul said, 'I will give her to him, that she may be a snare to him and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him'" (1 Samuel 18:21, ESV).

"And it came to pass at the time when Merab the daughter of Saul should have been given to David, that she was given unto Adriel the Meholathite to wife" (1 Samuel 18:19, KJV).

Application

Merab's story reminds believers that broken promises and spiritual unfaithfulness have real consequences, and we should guard our word with integrity before God and others.
