Lycaonia

Lycaonia was a region in central Asia Minor where Paul and Barnabas performed a remarkable miracle that led the locals to mistake them for gods. This account demonstrates both the power of the Gospel and the danger of human pride in ministry.

Overview

Lycaonia was an ancient region in central Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey) that Paul and Barnabas visited during the first missionary journey. In the city of Lystra, they healed a man crippled from birth, which so amazed the crowds that they attempted to worship Paul and Barnabas as incarnate gods. Paul and Barnabas immediately corrected this misunderstanding and redirected the people to the living God.

Key Scriptures

"And there sat a man impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked" (Acts 14:8, KJV). "The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men" (Acts 14:11, KJV). "We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein" (Acts 14:15, KJV).

Application

When God works powerfully through our witness, we must always direct attention to Christ rather than accepting personal credit or honor.
