Overview
Lukewarmness describes a state of spiritual apathy where believers neglect God's priorities, become absorbed in worldly pursuits, and lose fervent devotion. Both Old and New Testaments address this dangerous condition, exposing how easily believers drift from passionate service into complacent religiosity that displeases God.
Key Scriptures
"Then the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, saying, 'Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?'" (Haggai 1:4, ESV). The people prioritized their own comfort over God's house, neglecting what mattered most.
"'So you are neither hot nor cold. I wish you were either one or the other! But since you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth'" (Revelation 3:15-16, NIV). Jesus condemns the Laodicean church's spiritual indifference as utterly repugnant to Him.
Application
Examine your heart honestly: are you pursuing God with passionate devotion, or have comfort and complacency replaced fervent faith?
