Overview
Locusts appear throughout Scripture as devastating agents of judgment. In Joel's prophecy, locusts symbolize a coming plague of judgment, while in Exodus they represent one of God's ten plagues on Egypt. In Revelation, locusts figure prominently in end-times imagery, described with supernatural characteristics that transcend natural locusts.
Key Scriptures
"What the chewing locust left, the swarming locust has eaten; What the swarming locust left, the crawling locust has eaten; And what the crawling locust left, the consuming locust has eaten" (Joel 1:4, NASB).
"Then the LORD said to Moses, 'Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come up on the land of Egypt and eat every plant of the land, even all that the hail has left'" (Exodus 10:12, NASB).
"The appearance of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle; and on their heads appeared to be crowns like gold, and their faces were like the faces of men" (Revelation 9:7, NASB).
Application
Consider how God uses natural consequences and supernatural signs to call people to repentance and reveal His sovereign authority over all creation.
