Overview
Locks were essential fixtures in ancient Israel for securing doors and protecting valuables. Scripture records their use in both domestic and civic contexts, symbolizing the security and order God desires for His people. The physical act of locking doors reflects wisdom in stewardship and prudent management of what God has entrusted to us.
Key Scriptures
"Ehud reached with his left hand, drew the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into [the king's] belly" after the doors were locked (Judges 3:23, ESV). "They waited till they were embarrassed. And behold, he did not open the doors of the roof room; so they took the key and opened them" (Judges 3:25, ESV). Regarding Jerusalem's restoration, "Hanun and the inhabitants of Zanoah repaired the Valley Gate... they set its doors, its bolts, and its bars" (Nehemiah 3:13, ESV).
Application
We should exercise wisdom in protecting our homes and families while ultimately trusting God as our supreme security and refuge.
