Lawyer

Jesus critiqued the lawyers and teachers of the law for their hypocrisy, burdensome traditions, and rejection of God's Word. The parable of the Good Samaritan illustrates true love of neighbor over legalistic concern.

Overview

In Luke 10 and 11, Jesus encounters lawyers (experts in Jewish law) and exposes their spiritual blindness. Rather than leading people to God's truth, they imposed heavy regulations while neglecting justice and the love of God. Jesus taught that genuine righteousness comes from understanding and obeying Scripture, not from human tradition.

Key Scriptures

"And one of the lawyers answered him, 'Teacher, in saying this you insult us too.' And he said, 'Woe to you lawyers also! For you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers'" (Luke 11:45-46, ESV).

"And Jesus answered him, 'Do this, and you will live.' But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, 'And who is my neighbor?'" (Luke 10:28-29, ESV).

Application

Examine whether your faith adds burdensome rules or points others to Christ's liberating truth found in Scripture alone.
