Overview
The Jubilee year, celebrated every fifty years after seven cycles of seven years, was a time when debts were forgiven, slaves were freed, and land was returned to its original owners. This institution demonstrated God's heart for justice and His desire that no Israelite would experience permanent poverty or servitude. The Jubilee anticipated the ultimate redemption available through Christ.
Key Scriptures
"Count off seven sabbaths of years—seven times seven years—so that the seven sabbaths of years amount to a period of forty-nine years. Then have the trumpet sounded everywhere on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement sound the trumpet throughout your land" (Leviticus 25:8-9, NIV).
"Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you; each of you is to return to your family property and to your own clan" (Leviticus 25:10, NIV).
Application
Consider how Jubilee principles challenge believers to practice generosity, forgive debts, and seek justice for the vulnerable in society today.
