Jezebel

Jezebel was the wife of King Ahab who led Israel into idolatry and wickedness, becoming a biblical symbol of spiritual rebellion and opposition to God's prophets. Her life and death serve as a stark warning about the consequences of pride and resistance to God's truth.

Overview

Jezebel was the Phoenician princess who married King Ahab of Israel and introduced Baal worship to the northern kingdom. She actively persecuted God's prophets, including Elijah, and manipulated her husband into grave spiritual compromise. Her reign exemplified how individual rebellion against God can corrupt an entire nation.

Key Scriptures

"And Elijah said to Ahab, 'Have you killed and also taken possession?' And Ahab said to Elijah, 'Have you found me, O my enemy?' He answered, 'I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do what is evil in the sight of the Lord'" (1 Kings 21:20, ESV).

"So Jehu drove on to Jezreel. And when Jezebel heard of it, she painted her eyes and adorned her head and looked out of the window. And as Jehu entered the gate, she said, 'Is it peace, you Zimri, murderer of your master?'" (2 Kings 9:30-31, ESV).

Application

Recognize how subtle spiritual compromise and pride can lead to hardness of heart; remain vigilant against cultural pressures that contradict Scripture.
