Jehoiakim

Jehoiakim was a king of Judah who reigned during the final years before the Babylonian exile, marked by disobedience to God and resistance to His prophets. His reign demonstrates the consequences of turning from the Lord and rejecting His word.

Overview

Jehoiakim became king of Judah at age twenty-five after his father Josiah's death, initially under Egyptian control before becoming a Babylonian vassal. He is remembered as an evil king who displeased the Lord through his idolatry, injustice, and defiance of God's prophets. His twenty-year reign witnessed increasing judgment from God through military invasions and hardship.

Key Scriptures

"And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord his God" (2 Chronicles 36:5, ESV). "Against him came up Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and bound him in chains to take him to Babylon" (2 Chronicles 36:6, ESV). "The Lord sent against him bands of the Chaldeans and bands of the Arameans and bands of the Moabites and bands of the Ammonites, and sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by his servants the prophets" (2 Kings 24:2, ESV).

Application

Jehoiakim's downfall illustrates how persistent rebellion against God's word inevitably brings divine judgment, warning us to heed Scripture and submit to God's authority in our lives.
