Jehizkiah

Jehizkiah was a leader in Ephraim during King Pekah's reign who opposed the enslavement of Judahite captives and advocated for their release based on God's law.

Overview

Jehizkiah appears in 2 Chronicles 28 as a man of conscience who stood against the military leaders of Israel during a conflict between the northern and southern kingdoms. When the army of Ephraim brought back 200,000 captives from Judah, Jehizkiah and other leaders confronted the soldiers, insisting the captives be released because Israel's own sin made them unworthy to enslave others.

Key Scriptures

"Then a man of God came to him and said, 'O king, do not let the army of Israel go with you, for the LORD is not with Israel, of all the people of Ephraim'" (2 Chronicles 28:9, ESV).

"And Jehizkiah, one of the leaders of Ephraim, stood up before the assembly and said to them, 'You must not bring the captives here, for you propose to bring guilt upon us against the LORD in addition to our present sins and guilt'" (2 Chronicles 28:12-13, ESV).

Application

Believers should courageously speak up for justice and mercy, recognizing that our own sinfulness calls us to humility rather than cruelty toward others.
