Overview
The tribe of Issachar received their inheritance in the northern region of Canaan, encompassing rich agricultural land between Mount Gilboa and the Jordan Valley. According to Genesis 49:14-15, Jacob described Issachar as "a strong donkey" willing to bear burdens, suggesting a people suited to labor and service. The tribe became known for their practical wisdom and understanding of Israel's circumstances (1 Chronicles 12:32).
Key Scriptures
"Joshua gave to the children of Issachar according to their families" (Joshua 19:23, NASB). The tribe's territory included cities such as Jezreel, Chesulloth, Shunem, Hapharaim, Shion, and Anaharath (Joshua 19:17-23). During the dedication of the tabernacle, Nethanel son of Zuar brought Issachar's offering: "his offering was one silver plate whose weight was one hundred and thirty shekels" (Numbers 7:18, ESV).
Application
Issachar's reputation for wisdom reminds us that spiritual discernment and understanding God's will are valuable spiritual gifts to develop and exercise in our daily lives.
