Issachar, the Tribe Of

Issachar was the ninth son of Jacob and founder of one of Israel's twelve tribes, known for their wisdom and understanding of the times. Their tribal territory was located in the fertile valleys of northern Canaan.

Overview

The tribe of Issachar received their inheritance in the northern region of Canaan, encompassing rich agricultural land between Mount Gilboa and the Jordan Valley. According to Genesis 49:14-15, Jacob described Issachar as "a strong donkey" willing to bear burdens, suggesting a people suited to labor and service. The tribe became known for their practical wisdom and understanding of Israel's circumstances (1 Chronicles 12:32).

Key Scriptures

"Joshua gave to the children of Issachar according to their families" (Joshua 19:23, NASB). The tribe's territory included cities such as Jezreel, Chesulloth, Shunem, Hapharaim, Shion, and Anaharath (Joshua 19:17-23). During the dedication of the tabernacle, Nethanel son of Zuar brought Issachar's offering: "his offering was one silver plate whose weight was one hundred and thirty shekels" (Numbers 7:18, ESV).
