Overview
Insanity in Scripture represents a loss of rational thought and behavioral control. While sometimes feigned for survival (as David did before Achish), insanity can also be a consequence of sin or divine judgment, as seen in Nebuchadnezzar's humbling. The Bible presents mental affliction as within God's sovereign control and ultimately subject to His restoration.
Key Scriptures
"So he changed his behavior before them and pretended to be insane in their hands, scratching on the doors of the gate and letting saliva run down his beard" (1 Samuel 21:13, ESV).
"Then Achish said to his servants, 'Behold, you see the man is mad'" (1 Samuel 21:14, ESV).
"Now his reason returned to him, and I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored him who lives forever" (Daniel 4:34, ESV).
"Festus said with a loud voice, 'Paul, you are out of your mind; your great learning is driving you insane'" (Acts 26:24, ESV).
