Huldah

Huldah was a prophetess in Israel during King Josiah's reign who authenticated the Book of the Law and delivered God's judgment. She stands as a biblical example of a woman called to speak God's Word with authority.

Overview

Huldah lived during the reign of King Josiah of Judah (640-609 BC) and served as a recognized prophetess in Jerusalem. When the high priest Hilkiah discovered the Book of the Law during temple repairs, King Josiah sent officials to inquire of the Lord through Huldah, demonstrating that her prophetic authority was trusted and respected even by the royal court.

Key Scriptures

"So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Acbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe (now she lived in Jerusalem in the Second Quarter), and they talked with her." (2 Kings 22:14, ESV)

"She said to them, 'Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Tell the man who sent you to me, Thus says the Lord: Behold, I will bring disaster upon this place and upon its inhabitants, all the words of the book that the king of Judah has read.'" (2 Kings 22:15-16, ESV)

Application

Huldah's example reminds believers that God speaks through His Word and calls both men and women to faithfully declare His truth.
