Overview
En-Dor was a Canaanite city where Saul, desperate and afraid before facing the Philistines, sought out a medium to contact the spirit of the dead prophet Samuel. Despite having previously removed mediums and spiritists from Israel, Saul's lack of faith led him to this forbidden practice, which God had explicitly prohibited in His law.
Key Scriptures
"Then Saul said to his servants, 'Seek out for me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her.' And his servants said to him, 'Behold, there is a medium at En-Dor.'" (1 Samuel 28:7, ESV)
"So Saul disguised himself and put on other clothes and went, he and two men with him. And they came to the woman by night. And he said, 'Divine for me by a spirit and bring up for me whomever I shall name to you.'" (1 Samuel 28:8, ESV)
"Do not turn to mediums or spiritists; do not seek them out to be defiled by them." (Leviticus 19:31, ESV)
Application
Believers must trust God's revealed Word and prayer rather than seeking guidance through spiritualism or worldly alternatives when facing uncertainty.
