Meres

Meres were Persian nobles or princes in the ancient Persian empire who served in positions of authority under King Ahasuerus. They represent the administrative structure of pagan kingdoms during biblical times.

Overview

The Meres were seven princes or nobles of Persia during the reign of King Ahasuerus (Xerxes I), serving as his closest advisors and administrators. These men held significant political power and influence in the Persian empire, demonstrating the hierarchical structure of ancient pagan governments that existed alongside God's people.

Key Scriptures

"And the king said to the wise men who knew the times (for this was the king's procedure toward all who knew law and judgment, and the closest to him were Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media who saw the king's face and sat first in the kingdom)" (Esther 1:13-14, ESV).

Application

Believers should recognize that God's sovereignty extends over all earthly governments and their leaders, using even pagan kingdoms to accomplish His purposes and protect His people.
