Communion of Saints

The communion of saints describes the spiritual bond uniting all believers in Christ across time and eternity, both the living and those who have gone before us.

What is the Communion of Saints?

The communion of saints refers to the precious reality that all who belong to Jesus Christ are united together in one spiritual family. This isn't merely a nice idea—it's a biblical truth woven throughout Scripture. In 1 Corinthians 12:12-13, Paul writes: "Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we all drank from one spiritual drink; for we drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ."

This communion extends beyond our local church or even our generation. In Hebrews 12:1, we read of being "surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses." These are believers from ages past who ran their race faithfully and now watch from heaven. Our faith connects us to Abraham, Moses, David, Peter, Paul, and countless unnamed saints whose lives testify to God's faithfulness across the centuries.

Living Out Our Unity in Christ

The communion of saints isn't meant to be a distant theological concept. It has profound implications for how we live today. In Ephesians 4:4-6, Paul emphasizes: "There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all." When we gather for worship, serve together in ministry, or intercede in prayer, we're expressing this mystical yet real communion.

This truth should transform how we treat one another. When we understand that every believer—whether sitting next to us in the pew or serving across the world—shares our identity in Christ, we're called to genuine love and mutual support. Galatians 6:10 reminds us: "Let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers." The communion of saints compels us toward hospitality, bearing one another's burdens, and celebrating each other's victories in Christ.

Encouragement for the Journey

As Canadian Christians, we're part of a story that stretches back two thousand years and includes believers from every nation, tribe, and tongue. When discouragement comes, we can draw strength from knowing we're not alone. We're surrounded by faithful saints who have overcome, and we're strengthened by the prayers and encouragement of our brothers and sisters in Christ today. The communion of saints is both a comfort and a call—comfort that we belong to something far greater than ourselves, and a call to live faithfully, knowing others will draw strength from our witness.
