Choice as a Reflection of God's Image
When God created humanity, He endowed us with the remarkable ability to make choices. Genesis 1:27 tells us we are made in God's image, and this includes the freedom to choose. Unlike the animals or the angels, humans possess genuine moral agency. We are not puppets on divine strings, nor are we slaves to our circumstances. From the very beginning, God demonstrated His respect for human choice by placing Adam and Eve in the garden with a clear choice before them—obey or disobey (Genesis 2:16-17). This foundational account reveals that meaningful choice requires real consequences; otherwise, it is not truly a choice at all.
Throughout Scripture, God consistently calls His people to choose. Joshua challenged Israel with these stirring words: "Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve" (Joshua 24:15). Moses presented the people with a stark choice: "I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, that you and your offspring may live" (Deuteronomy 30:15-16). These passages remind us that choice is not incidental to our faith—it is fundamental to it. God invites us into partnership with Him through our choices.
Wisdom in Decision-Making
While we have the freedom to choose, Scripture encourages us to choose wisely. The book of Proverbs repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking wisdom in our decisions. Proverbs 3:5-6 instructs us to "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." This is not about surrendering our capacity to choose, but rather about grounding our choices in God's character and guidance.
Jesus taught that our choices flow from the condition of our hearts. In Matthew 12:34, He said, "For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks." Our decisions reveal what we truly value and believe. The apostle Paul encouraged the Romans to "be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will" (Romans 12:2). As Christians, we are called to renew our thinking so that our choices increasingly align with God's purposes.
Living Out Our Choices
Every day presents us with choices that matter. We choose to forgive or hold grudges, to speak truth or remain silent, to serve others or pursue ourselves. In Galatians 5:13, Paul writes, "You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love." Our freedom to choose is not meant for selfish ends but for loving service.
As followers of Christ in Canada and beyond, we can take courage knowing that while the responsibility of choice rests with us, we are never alone. The Holy Spirit works within us, offering wisdom, conviction, and guidance. When we stumble and choose poorly, the grace of Christ remains available. Our choices matter eternally, and they are made in the loving presence of our Father.
"Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve... But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD." — Joshua 24:15
