Achish ruled the city of Gath, the hometown of Goliath. When David first came to him pretending to be mad (drooling on his beard), Achish dismissed him. Later, David returned and became a loyal vassal, living in Ziklag. Achish trusted David completely, believing David had become a traitor to Israel. He wanted David to fight alongside the Philistines against Saul, but other Philistine lords rejected David’s presence at the battle of Gilboa.
