Mark 12
Study Notes — Mark 11
6 sectionsMark chapter 11 presents a pivotal week in Jesus's ministry—His triumphal entry into Jerusalem, His dramatic cleansing of the temple, and His mounting conflict with religious leaders. Through the symbolic cursing of the fig tree and powerful teachings on faith and prayer, Jesus reveals both His authority as King and His concern for genuine worship. This chapter marks the beginning of the end, as Jesus openly challenges the religious establishment while demonstrating the transformative power of faith in God.
Jesus approaches Jerusalem and orchestrates a remarkable entry into the city. He sends two disciples to retrieve a young donkey that has never been ridden, assuring them that if questioned, they need only say "the Lord hath need of him" (v. 3). The disciples find everything exactly as Jesus predicted, demonstrating His supernatural knowledge and authority. The crowd responds with unbridled joy, spreading their garments and palm branches on the road while crying "Hosanna"—a cry meaning "save us" or "save now." They recognize Jesus as the promised messianic King (v. 10), fulfilling Zechariah 9:9. Yet notice the contrast: after this glorious welcome, Jesus enters the temple, surveys it quietly, and withdraws to Bethany (v. 11). His kingdom is not what the crowds expected—not political conquest, but spiritual transformation.
Application: Jesus's humble entry on a donkey (not a warhorse) reveals that true authority flows from servant-hearted humility, not earthly power.
The following morning, Jesus becomes hungry and approaches a fig tree full of leaves but bearing no fruit. He curses it, saying no one will eat fruit from it again. This is the only miracle of destruction in the Gospels, and it demands careful interpretation. The fig tree represents Israel (and by extension, any religious institution) that produces only external appearance without genuine spiritual fruit. The "time of figs was not yet" (v. 13) suggests that while figs should not have been expected in that season, the leaves promised fruit that never came—a picture of hypocrisy.
Application: We must examine ourselves: does our faith produce authentic spiritual fruit, or merely outward religious performance?
Jesus enters the temple with righteous fury, overturning the tables of money-changers and those selling sacrificial animals. He quotes Isaiah 56:7 and Jeremiah 7:11: His Father's house should be "a house of prayer for all nations," not "a den of thieves" (v. 17). The religious leaders had corrupted worship into a profitable enterprise, excluding Gentiles and exploiting the poor. Jesus's actions and teaching astonish the people, but they terrify the authorities, who immediately plot His destruction (v. 18).
Application: Authentic worship cannot be commercialized or corrupted. Jesus still demands that our churches prioritize genuine prayer and inclusion over profit and prestige.
Peter notices the fig tree has withered from its roots. Jesus uses this as a teaching moment about faith (v. 22). Whoever believes without doubting will receive whatever they ask in prayer (vv. 23-24). However, this promise is not a blank check for selfish desires; it is immediately qualified by the requirement to forgive others (vv. 25-26). Faith and forgiveness are inseparable. Unforgiveness blocks God's forgiveness toward us.
Application: Powerful prayer flows from a heart surrendered to God's will and free from bitterness toward others.
When challenged about His authority, Jesus responds with a counter-question about John the Baptist's authority. The leaders cannot answer honestly without condemning themselves, so they claim ignorance (v. 33). Jesus likewise declines to answer directly—not evasively, but because their hearts are closed to truth.
Application: True spiritual authority is recognized by those with open, humble hearts; it cannot be defended to those determined to resist it.
Mark 11 challenges modern Christians to examine our priorities: Are we pursuing the Kingdom as Jesus defines it, or as culture defines it? Do we produce genuine spiritual fruit, or merely maintain appearances? Does our faith genuinely trust God, and does our prayer life flow from forgiveness? As we follow Christ, may we embrace His humble, servant-hearted authority and demonstrate authentic faith that transforms the world.
