Galatians 4
Study Notes — Galatians 3
5 sectionsIn Galatians 3, Paul makes his most direct and passionate appeal to the Galatian churches, confronting them for abandoning the gospel of grace that he had preached to them. The central issue is this: some false teachers (called "Judaizers") had convinced the believers that they needed to add the works of the Old Testament law—particularly circumcision—to their faith in Christ in order to be truly saved or to grow spiritually. Paul's response is to show from Scripture itself that righteousness has always come through faith, not works. He traces this theme from Abraham through the Old Testament law, showing how Christ fulfilled all that the law pointed toward, and how faith in Jesus is the only way to receive God's blessing.
Paul opens with emotional language, calling the Galatians "foolish" and asking who has "bewitched" them. He reminds them that they had seen Jesus Christ crucified before their very eyes through his preaching (verse 1). The heart of his challenge comes in verse 2: Did they receive the Holy Spirit by doing works of the law, or by believing the gospel message? The answer was obvious to them—they had received the Spirit through faith alone. Yet here they were, having begun in the Spirit, now trying to be perfected by the flesh (verse 3)—that is, by human effort and obedience to external rules. Paul appeals to their own experience: they had suffered persecution for Christ (verse 4), and surely that suffering wasn't in vain. Verse 5 drives the point home: the Spirit's miraculous work among them continues because of faith, not because of law-keeping.
Application: Believers today still face this temptation—to add human works, self-improvement, or external obedience to the finished work of Christ. The Spirit grows us through faith and dependence on Jesus, not through our own striving.
Paul grounds his argument in Scripture, beginning with Abraham, Israel's greatest ancestor. He quotes Genesis 15:6: "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness" (verse 6). Abraham was justified by faith, not by works of the law—centuries before the law was even given. Therefore, those who follow Abraham's example of faith are truly his children (verse 7). God foresaw that justification would come through faith for all nations, not just Jews, and this gospel was preached to Abraham himself in the form of the promise that "all nations" would be blessed through him (verse 8). That blessing finds its fulfillment in Christ. All who believe are "blessed with faithful Abraham" (verse 9).
Verses 10–14 reveal the stark contrast: those who rely on the law are "under the curse" because no one can perfectly obey every command of the law (verse 10). But Christ has redeemed us from that curse by becoming cursed for us (verse 13). His death on the cross—where criminals were hung as a sign of God's curse—transferred that curse from us to himself. As a result, the blessing promised to Abraham now comes to the Gentiles, and we receive the Spirit through faith in Christ (verse 14).
Application: Our righteousness is never earned; it is received as a gift through faith in Christ's substitutionary death.
Paul uses a human illustration: once a covenant is confirmed, no one changes or cancels it (verse 15). God made a promise to Abraham and to his Seed—meaning Christ himself (verse 16). This covenant, confirmed in Christ, cannot be nullified by the law that came 430 years later (verse 17). The inheritance comes by promise, not by law (verse 18). So what, then, is the purpose of the law? It was added because of transgressions, serving as a temporary guardian until Christ came (verses 19–20). The law is not opposed to the promise (verse 21); rather, if any law could give life, that would be the way to righteousness. But no law can do that. Instead, Scripture shows that all are under sin, and only the promise through faith in Jesus provides redemption (verse 22).
Application: The law reveals sin and drives us to Christ; it was never meant to be our path to salvation.
Before Christ came, the law kept believers confined, like a strict schoolmaster preparing them for the Teacher to come (verses 23–24). But now that faith has arrived, we are no longer under that schoolmaster (verse 25). All who believe are God's children through faith in Christ Jesus (verse 26). Baptism symbolizes that we have "put on Christ" and belong to him completely (verse 27). In Christ, all earthly divisions—Jew and Greek, slave and free, male and female—lose their significance (verse 28). If we belong to Christ, we are Abraham's seed and heirs of the promise (verse 29).
Application: Our identity and inheritance are secure in Christ
