Vicegerency

3 scripture references — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

Jesus delegated authority to His church to exercise His will on earth. This vicegerent power includes binding and loosing—making decisions about doctrine, discipline, and forgiveness that have eternal significance. Such authority is exercised not independently but as representatives of Christ, operating under His lordship and according to Scripture.

Key Scriptures

"I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven" (Matthew 16:19, ESV).

"Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven" (Matthew 18:18, ESV).

"If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld" (John 20:23, ESV).

Application

Churches must exercise their God-given authority with humility and biblical wisdom, remembering they act as Christ's representatives accountable to His Word.
