Overview
Samlah was one of the kings who ruled over Edom before any king reigned over Israel. He succeeded Hadad in the Edomite monarchy and was himself succeeded by Shaul. Little is known of his reign beyond his place in the royal succession of Esau's descendants.
Key Scriptures
"Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place" (Genesis 36:36, ESV).
"Samlah died, and Shaul of Rehoboth on the Euphrates reigned in his place" (Genesis 36:37, ESV).
"When Hadad died, Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place" (1 Chronicles 1:47, ESV).
Application
Though minor figures in Scripture, the Edomite kings remind us that God's providence extends over all nations and their histories are recorded in His Word for our instruction.
