Overview
The Senate represented a council of governing officials responsible for leadership, judgment, and counsel in biblical times. Both the Old Testament and New Testament reference senates as authoritative bodies that worked alongside kings and apostles to administer justice and guide the people of God.
Key Scriptures
"He sent a man before them—Joseph, who was sold as a slave. His feet were hurt with shackles; his neck was put in a collar of iron; until what he had said came to pass, the word of the LORD tested him. The king sent and released him; the ruler of the peoples set him free. He made him lord of his house and ruler of all his possessions, to bind his princes at his pleasure and to teach his elders wisdom." (Psalm 105:17-22, ESV)
"And when they heard this, they entered into the temple early in the morning and went on with their teaching. Now the high priest came and those with him and called together the council (senate) and all the senate of the children of Israel" (Acts 5:21, NASB).
Application
Believers should pray for those in governing authorities, recognizing that all legitimate leadership ultimately serves under God's sovereign rule.
