Overview
Salome appears in the Gospels as the mother of the apostles James and John, the sons of Zebedee. She demonstrated both faith in following Jesus and human ambition when she sought privileged positions for her sons in His kingdom. Salome was also among the faithful women who witnessed Jesus's crucifixion and visited His tomb after the resurrection.
Key Scriptures
"Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came to him with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him" (Matthew 20:20, NIV). "Jesus said to them, 'You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father'" (Matthew 20:23, NIV). "Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee's sons" (Matthew 27:55-56, NIV).
Application
Salome's example reminds us to balance faithful devotion to Christ with humility, recognizing that God's purposes supersede our personal ambitions.
