Overview
Rachel was the younger daughter of Laban and Jacob's second wife, whom he loved deeply. Though initially barren, God opened her womb to bear Joseph and Benjamin, the sons through whom God's covenant promises would flow to future generations. Her life demonstrates both the joy of faith rewarded and the sorrow of childbirth complications, as she died giving birth to Benjamin near Bethlehem.
Key Scriptures
"Then Rachel said, 'God has judged me, and has also heard my voice and given me a son.' Therefore she called his name Dan" (Genesis 30:6, ESV). "So Rachel died, and she was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem)" (Genesis 35:19, ESV). "Then Jacob set up a pillar over her grave; it is the pillar of Rachel's tomb, which stands to this day" (Genesis 35:20, ESV).
Application
Rachel's faith journey reminds believers that God's timing in fulfilling His promises is perfect, and that even in difficulty and loss, His purposes are accomplished through our lives.
