Overview
Ophrah served as the hometown of Gideon, the judge who delivered Israel from Midianite oppression. After God's miraculous victory through Gideon, the town became a spiritual center where Gideon built an altar to commemorate God's faithfulness. However, Ophrah's spiritual legacy was marred when Gideon created a golden ephod that became an object of idolatry for Israel.
Key Scriptures
"Then the Lord appeared to him and said, 'Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?'" (Judges 6:14, ESV). "So Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it, The Lord Is Peace" (Judges 6:24, ESV). "And Gideon made an ephod of it and put it in his city, in Ophrah. And all Israel whored after it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and to his family" (Judges 8:27, ESV).
Application
Guard against letting spiritual victories become occasions for pride or the creation of human-made religious objects that distract from worshiping God alone.
