Mordecai

23 scripture references across 4 subtopics — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

Mordecai was a Benjamite Jew living in Susa during the Persian exile (Esther 2:5-6). He served in the king's palace and discovered a conspiracy against King Ahasuerus, reporting it to the monarch (Esther 2:21-23). When Haman plotted to destroy all Jews in the kingdom, Mordecai worked with his cousin Esther to expose the plot and save their people. His reward came when the king honored him greatly, eventually elevating him to a position of authority (Esther 6:1-11).

Key Scriptures

"When Mordecai learned all that had been done, Mordecai tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried out with a loud and bitter cry" (Esther 4:1, NASB).

"And all the king's servants and the people of the king's provinces know that if any man or woman goes to the king inside the inner court without being called, there is but one law—to be put to death, except the one to whom the king holds out the golden scepter" (Esther 4:11, ESV).

Application

Trust that God works behind the scenes to accomplish His purposes, and remain faithful to do what is right even when facing personal danger.
