Magistrate

0 scripture references — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

Scripture establishes that magistrates and governing authorities are ordained by God to maintain justice and social order. While their authority is real and deserving of respect, it remains subordinate to God's ultimate authority, and Christians must obey God rather than man when human law contradicts divine command.

Key Scriptures

"Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God" (Romans 13:1, ESV).

"For the one in authority is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason" (Romans 13:4, NIV).

"We must obey God rather than human beings!" (Acts 5:29, NIV).

Application

Pray for your leaders and render proper taxes and respect to authorities, while remaining vigilant that no earthly law supersedes your allegiance to Christ and His Word.
