Japhia

0 scripture references — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

Japhia ruled Lachish, a major Canaanite city, during the time of Joshua's military campaigns in Canaan. When Joshua learned of a coalition of five Amorite kings, including Japhia, marching against Gibeon, he led Israel to victory. After defeating them in battle, Joshua pursued the kings and executed them, fulfilling God's promise to deliver Canaan into Israel's hands.

Key Scriptures

"Now it came to pass when Japhia king of Lachish heard how Joshua had taken Ai and had utterly destroyed it" (Joshua 10:3, NASB). "So Joshua struck them down and put them to death, and hung their bodies on five trees" (Joshua 10:26, ESV). "Thus the LORD fought for Israel" (Joshua 10:42, NIV).

Application

Japhia's defeat reminds believers that God's purposes will be accomplished despite human opposition, encouraging trust in His sovereignty over circumstances.
