Hagar

10 scripture references across 2 subtopics — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

Hagar was an Egyptian slave of Sarai (Sarah) who bore a son to Abraham named Ishmael. When Sarah remained barren, she gave Hagar to Abraham as a surrogate, a custom of that culture. Ishmael became the father of twelve princes and numerous descendants who formed the Arab nations, as recorded in Genesis 25. The apostle Paul later employed Hagar's story as an allegory, contrasting her with Sarah to illustrate the difference between the covenant of works and the covenant of grace.

Key Scriptures

"Tell me, you who want to be under the law, are you not aware of what the law says? For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the free woman" (Galatians 4:21-22, NIV).

"These things are being taken figuratively: The women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves: This is Hagar" (Galatians 4:24, NIV).

Application

Reflect on how pursuing God's promises through human effort rather than faith often produces spiritual turmoil, just as Hagar's situation demonstrated the futility of working outside God's covenant design.
