Overview
Hagar was an Egyptian slave of Sarai (Sarah) who bore a son to Abraham named Ishmael. When Sarah remained barren, she gave Hagar to Abraham as a surrogate, a custom of that culture. Ishmael became the father of twelve princes and numerous descendants who formed the Arab nations, as recorded in Genesis 25. The apostle Paul later employed Hagar's story as an allegory, contrasting her with Sarah to illustrate the difference between the covenant of works and the covenant of grace.
