Emancipation

10 scripture references — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

The Jubilee year (every fiftieth year) was God's ordained time for emancipation in Israel. All Hebrew slaves were to be released with generous provisions, and property was to be returned to original owners. This system prevented permanent bondage and ensured economic justice, demonstrating God's concern for the vulnerable and oppressed.

Key Scriptures

"And you shall consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you" (Leviticus 25:10, ESV).

"Six years you shall sow your field, and six years you shall prune your vineyard and gather in its fruits. But in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath of solemn rest for the land" (Leviticus 25:3-4, ESV).

"If your brother becomes poor and sells himself to you, you shall not make him serve as a slave" (Leviticus 25:39, ESV).

Application

Reflect on how God's Jubilee principles challenge us to pursue justice, generosity, and freedom for the marginalized in our communities today.
