Earthquakes as Demonstrations of God's Power
The Bible presents earthquakes as profound manifestations of God's sovereign authority over creation. When the Lord descended upon Mount Sinai to give the Ten Commandments, the entire mountain quaked terribly (Exodus 19:18). The people trembled not merely from fear of the natural phenomenon, but from encountering the holy presence of the Almighty. Similarly, when Jesus rose from the dead, "there was a great earthquake" (Matthew 28:2), signaling that the powers of death had been overcome and creation itself was responding to redemption's triumph.
Throughout the Old Testament, earthquakes often accompanied God's interventions in human history. When the earth opened and swallowed Korah and his rebels (Numbers 16:31-32), it demonstrated God's judgment against those who rejected His chosen leaders. Even in moments of deliverance, earthquakes marked God's saving action—the Psalmist declares, "The earth trembled and quaked; the foundations of the mountains shook; they trembled because he was angry" (Psalm 18:7). These accounts remind us that we serve a God who is not distant or impersonal, but actively involved in His creation.
Earthquakes as Signs and Warnings
Jesus Himself spoke of earthquakes as signs preceding His return. In Matthew 24:7 and Luke 21:11, Christ warned that "there will be famines and earthquakes in various places." These are not random natural disasters, but part of the prophetic pattern leading to His second coming. Rather than causing despair, this knowledge should awaken believers to spiritual vigilance and deepened faith during uncertain times.
The book of Revelation employs earthquakes symbolically throughout its apocalyptic vision. When the sixth seal is opened, "there came a great earthquake" (Revelation 6:12), accompanied by cosmic upheaval. Later, at the very end of history, "there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder and a severe earthquake" (Revelation 11:19) as God's kingdom is fully consummated. These passages teach us that earthquakes, whether literal or symbolic, remind us of God's ultimate authority and the temporary nature of earthly structures.
Living with Hope Amid Uncertainty
For those of us living in Canada, where earthquakes are less common than in other regions, these biblical accounts might seem distant. Yet they carry essential spiritual lessons. God calls us to build our lives on unshakeable foundations—not on wealth, status, or earthly security, but on Christ Himself. Jesus taught, "Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock" (Matthew 7:24-25).
When we encounter news of earthquakes anywhere in our world, we can respond with prayer for those affected and renewed commitment to our own spiritual foundations. These natural phenomena call us to trust God's sovereignty, to seek His kingdom first, and to live with readiness for Christ's return.
