Who the Devil Is
The Devil, also called Satan, Lucifer, and the prince of darkness, is a fallen spiritual being who opposes God and His people. Scripture reveals that Satan was originally a high-ranking angel who rebelled against God's authority. In Isaiah 14:12-15, we read about his fall from heaven due to pride and his desire to exalt himself above God. Similarly, Ezekiel 28:12-17 describes his original beauty and position, along with his corruption through pride. This rebellion wasn't a momentary lapse but a deliberate choice to oppose the Almighty.
The Devil is real, intelligent, and actively works against God's purposes in our world. He is not equal to God—he is a created being with limited power and knowledge. However, he is described in 1 Peter 5:8 as "a roaring lion looking for someone to devour," indicating he remains dangerous and active. Jesus Himself acknowledged Satan's reality and power, engaging him directly during His temptation in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11) and casting demons out of those afflicted by his influence throughout His ministry.
The Devil's Tactics and Limitations
Understanding how Satan operates helps us recognize and resist his schemes. The Devil works through deception, temptation, and accusation. John 8:44 calls him "the father of lies," reminding us that his primary weapon is falsehood. He distorts God's Word, questions God's goodness, and exploits our desires and fears. Ephesians 6:12 tells us that "our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."
Yet the Bible is abundantly clear: the Devil's power is limited, and his ultimate defeat is certain. Christ's resurrection and ascension stripped Satan of his authority over believers. Colossians 2:15 declares that Jesus "disarmed the powers and authorities" and "made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross." Satan cannot touch a believer's salvation or eternal security. James 4:7 provides practical comfort: "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
How to Stand Against the Devil
As Canadian Christians, we can confidently resist Satan through God's provision. Ephesians 6:10-18 outlines the full armor of God—truth, righteousness, the gospel, faith, salvation, and God's Word—all held together by prayer. We stand firm by knowing our identity in Christ, remaining in God's Word, maintaining prayerful vigilance, and living in obedience. Proverbs 8:13 reminds us that "the fear of the Lord is to hate evil," and cultivating a deep relationship with Jesus is our greatest defense.
Remember that you are not fighting alone. The Spirit of God who dwells within you is greater than the one in the world (1 John 4:4). When tempted or troubled, turn immediately to Jesus, confess any sin, and claim the victory already won at Calvary. In our daily lives, this means choosing truth over lies, obedience over compromise, and faith over fear.
