Amana

1 scripture reference — Nave's Topical Bible

The Mountain of Amana

Amana is mentioned in Song of Solomon 4:8, where the beloved calls to his bride: "Come with me from Lebanon, my bride, come with me from Lebanon. Descend from the crest of Amana, from the top of Senir, the summit of Hermon, from the lions' dens and the mountain haunts of leopards." This reference places Amana as a peak in the Lebanon mountain range, likely part of the Anti-Lebanon mountains near Mount Hermon.

The geographical context is significant because these mountains represented remote, dangerous places inhabited by wild beasts. In the poetic language of the Song, the bridegroom is calling his beloved away from places of isolation and danger into the safety and intimacy of relationship with him. The name "Amana" itself is related to the Hebrew word "aman," meaning "to be firm, faithful, or trustworthy."

Symbolic Meaning in Scripture

The deeper spiritual significance of Amana emerges when we consider its connection to faithfulness and covenant relationship. Just as the bridegroom in Song of Solomon calls his beloved from the dangerous heights of Amana into loving communion, so Christ calls His church away from the perilous isolation of sin into the safety of His love.

The mention of Amana alongside Senir and Hermon—all lofty, majestic peaks—reminds us that even our highest human achievements and most impressive spiritual heights cannot compare to the intimacy of relationship with our Savior. God doesn't call us to remain on the mountaintops of religious experience, but to walk with Him in the valleys of daily life where true faithfulness is demonstrated.

Practical Application for Believers

For Canadian believers today, Amana teaches us about the nature of God's call upon our lives. Like the beloved in the Song, we may sometimes find ourselves in places of spiritual isolation—whether through pride, self-reliance, or simply the busyness of life that keeps us from intimate fellowship with Christ. The call from Amana reminds us that God desires relationship over religious performance, intimacy over isolation.

The connection between Amana and faithfulness also challenges us to examine our own trustworthiness in our relationships with God and others. Just as Amana represents steadfast reliability, we are called to be people whose word can be trusted and whose commitment to Christ remains firm through all seasons of life.
