Alpheus

The Father of James the Less

Alpheus is mentioned in the New Testament as the father of James, one of Jesus' twelve apostles. This James is often called "James the Less" or "James the Younger" to distinguish him from James, the son of Zebedee. In the Gospel accounts, we see Alpheus identified specifically in relation to his son's calling and ministry. Mark 2:14 records Jesus calling "Levi the son of Alpheus" to follow Him, while Matthew 10:3 lists "James the son of Alpheus" among the twelve disciples.

What's remarkable is that Alpheus had two sons who became followers of Christ - James and Levi (also known as Matthew). This suggests a household where God's calling touched multiple family members. While we know little about Alpheus himself, the fact that both his sons responded to Jesus' invitation speaks to either a spiritually prepared family environment or God's sovereign grace working powerfully within one household.

A Family Called to Ministry

The calling of both James and Levi from the same family reminds us that God often works through family lines and relationships. Levi was a tax collector when Jesus called him, a profession despised by fellow Jews for its association with Roman oppression. Yet when Jesus said "Follow me" in Mark 2:14, Levi immediately left his lucrative but morally compromising career to become a disciple.

James, his brother, also answered the call to apostleship. Though less prominent in the Gospel narratives than some other disciples, James faithfully served alongside the other apostles. Both brothers were present in the upper room after Jesus' ascension, continuing in prayer and fellowship with the early church. Their shared commitment to following Christ demonstrates how powerfully the Gospel can transform entire families when hearts are open to God's calling.

Lessons for Christian Families Today

Alpheus' story encourages Christian parents and families today. While we don't know the specifics of how he raised his sons, the fruit of their lives suggests an environment where responding to God's call was valued over worldly success or security. Both sons left profitable careers - one as a tax collector, another likely involved in the family business - to follow Jesus wholeheartedly.

This challenges modern believers to consider what kind of spiritual legacy we're building in our homes. Are we creating environments where our children can hear and respond to God's voice? Are we modeling the kind of faith that values eternal treasures over temporary gains? Alpheus may be a minor figure in Scripture, but his family's response to Christ offers a powerful example of multi-generational faithfulness to God's calling.

"And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alpheus sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, 'Follow me.' And he rose and followed him." - Mark 2:14
