Ahikam

38 scripture references — Nave's Topical Bible

A Man of Influence and Character

Ahikam, son of Shaphan the scribe, emerges in Scripture as a man of significant political influence who used his position to serve God's purposes. In 2 Kings 22:12-14, we see him among the trusted officials King Josiah sent to inquire of the Lord through the prophetess Huldah when the Book of the Law was discovered. This reveals Ahikam as someone the king considered spiritually discerning and reliable for matters of great importance.

His family background also speaks to his character. As the son of Shaphan, who served as scribe during Josiah's reign, Ahikam grew up in an environment where God's Word was valued and preserved. This godly heritage equipped him to recognize truth and stand for righteousness, even when it was costly to do so.

Defender of God's Prophet

Ahikam's most notable act of courage is recorded in Jeremiah 26:24, where we learn that "the hand of Ahikam son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah to keep him from being given into the hands of the people to be put to death." This occurred after Jeremiah delivered God's warning of judgment against Jerusalem and the temple, causing an uproar among the priests and people who wanted the prophet executed for his message.

While others in leadership cowered or joined the mob, Ahikam stood firmly beside God's messenger. This required tremendous moral courage, as protecting Jeremiah meant opposing popular opinion and risking his own reputation and safety. His intervention literally saved Jeremiah's life and allowed the prophet to continue his ministry during this crucial period in Judah's history.

Lessons for Today's Believers

Ahikam's example teaches us the importance of using whatever influence we have to protect and support those who faithfully proclaim God's truth. In our workplaces, communities, and even churches, there are times when standing with what is right means standing against the crowd. Like Ahikam, we must be willing to extend our "hand" to those who need protection or encouragement in their service to God.

His life also reminds us that faithful service often happens behind the scenes. While Jeremiah's name is well-known, Ahikam's crucial role in preserving the prophet's ministry shows us that God values every act of faithful support, even when it doesn't receive public recognition. Whether we're the prophet speaking God's word or the Ahikam protecting those who do, both roles are essential in God's kingdom work.
