Abda

1 scripture reference — Nave's Topical Bible

Biblical Identification and Role

The name Abda appears twice in Scripture, referring to two different individuals who served in positions of responsibility and trust. In 1 Kings 4:6, we encounter Abda the son of Adoniram, who served as an officer under King Solomon's administration. This Abda held the significant position of overseeing the forced labor, a role that required both administrative skill and the trust of the king himself.

The second mention appears in Nehemiah 11:17, where Abda is identified as the son of Shammua and grandson of Galal, serving as a Levite in post-exilic Jerusalem. This Abda was among those who returned from Babylonian captivity and dedicated himself to the restoration of proper worship in the rebuilt temple. His inclusion in the genealogical records emphasizes the continuity of faithful service across generations.

The Significance of Faithful Service

Both instances of Abda in Scripture highlight individuals who served faithfully in their appointed roles, whether in civil administration or religious duties. The name itself means "servant" or "worshiper," which beautifully captures the essence of both men's contributions to God's people. Solomon's officer Abda managed complex administrative responsibilities during Israel's golden age, while the Levite Abda participated in the spiritual restoration of a nation returning from exile.

These examples remind us that God values faithful service in all spheres of life. Whether in secular employment like the first Abda or in religious ministry like the second, both men demonstrated that our calling is to serve with integrity and dedication. Their inclusion in Scripture's historical records shows that God notices and honors those who faithfully fulfill their responsibilities, even when their names might otherwise be forgotten by history.

Lessons for Modern Believers

The legacy of these two servants of God challenges contemporary believers to examine our own approach to service and responsibility. Like both men named Abda, we are called to be faithful stewards in whatever positions God has placed us, whether in business, government, ministry, or family life. Their examples encourage us that no role is too small or insignificant when performed unto the Lord, and that faithful service often spans generations, building upon the foundation laid by those who came before us.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters. - Colossians 3:23
