Surrender and Obedience — The Path to Genuine Intimacy

There is a version of Christianity that is all knowledge and no surrender. It is the version that can quote Scripture, attend services, participate in small groups, and still live on its own terms. It knows the right language, holds the right theological positions, and appears by all outward measures to be healthy and growing — but underneath, there is a throne that has never actually been handed over to God. And as long as that throne remains occupied by self, genuine intimacy with God will remain just out of reach.

Here is the truth that many Christians spend their whole lives avoiding: you cannot have intimacy with God while simultaneously living for yourself. Closeness with God is not merely about spiritual experiences or emotional feelings — it is about alignment. It is about living in such a way that your will is increasingly submitted to His will, your desires are increasingly shaped by His desires, and your life increasingly reflects His character. That kind of alignment does not happen by accident. It happens through surrender. Consistent, daily, often costly surrender.

Luke 9:23 (ESV)  And he said to all, 'If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.'

Daily. Not once at an altar call years ago. Daily. Every morning you wake up, the call to discipleship is renewed. Deny yourself — not as a form of self-punishment, but as a deliberate, conscious choice to put God's agenda above your own. Take up your cross — a symbol of death to self-interest, self-promotion, and self-protection. And follow — not just affirm, not just admire, but actually follow where Jesus leads, even when it is costly, even when it is uncomfortable, even when it contradicts what you want.

The reason so many Christians plateau in their spiritual growth is that they have accepted a version of following Jesus that requires very little actual sacrifice. They have designed a Christianity that fits neatly around their existing lifestyle, their existing priorities, their existing comfort level. And they wonder why God feels distant, why their prayers feel hollow, why their reading of Scripture produces so little change. The answer is that they have never fully surrendered.

Romans 12:1-2 (ESV)  I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

A living sacrifice. Paul uses this phrase deliberately. In the Old Testament, the animal sacrificed on the altar did not get up and walk away. It was fully and finally surrendered. Paul takes that image and applies it to the Christian life — but with a twist. The sacrifice is living. You are still walking around. You still have choices to make every day. And the call is to make those choices as someone who has already placed themselves on the altar. You are not your own. You have been bought with a price. You live for Him.

Obedience is the visible expression of this surrender. And here is where the love of God and the call to obedience meet in the most beautiful way:

John 14:21 (ESV)  Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.

Jesus makes a direct and unmistakable connection between obedience and intimacy. "I will manifest myself to him." In other words, the person who loves Jesus enough to obey Him is the person to whom Jesus reveals Himself more fully. Intimacy with God is not disconnected from obedience to God — it is produced by it. When you choose to obey God in an area where your flesh is screaming for another path, you are communicating to God that He is more important to you than your comfort, your preferences, and your plans. And He responds to that.

This is why the Christian who is secretly living in disobedience — who is harboring unforgiveness, or pursuing a relationship God has clearly forbidden, or withholding honesty in an area of their life, or resisting a call He has placed on them — finds prayer dry and worship hollow. It is not that God has withdrawn His love. It is that they have placed a barrier between themselves and the intimacy that obedience unlocks.

1 Samuel 15:22 (NASB 1995)  Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.

Saul had offered the sacrifice. He had performed the religious ritual. But he had done it his way, on his terms, in disobedience to the clear word of God. And God's response was devastating: obedience is better than sacrifice. Religious performance without genuine surrender means nothing to God. He is not impressed by our church attendance, our giving, or our service if underneath all of it we are still running our own lives and calling Him Lord with our lips while ignoring His word with our lives.

I want to ask you the question that I believe is at the heart of where you are in your walk with God right now: Is there something God is calling you to do that you have not yet done? Is there a step of obedience you have been delaying? Is there an area of your life you have been unwilling to surrender? That one thing — that one point of resistance — may be the very key that unlocks the next level of closeness with God that your soul is longing for. Surrender it. Obey. And watch what God does.
