Overview
In 1 Samuel 5-6, tumors appear as a plague sent by God upon the Philistines after they captured the Ark of the Covenant. This physical affliction served as divine judgment for their arrogance and idolatry, demonstrating God's sovereignty over all nations and His protection of His covenant people.
Key Scriptures
"So the LORD's hand was heavy on the people of Ashdod and those around them; he brought devastation on them and afflicted them with tumors" (1 Samuel 5:6, NIV).
"The tumors appeared on men and mice throughout the land, and there was death and destruction everywhere you looked" (1 Samuel 5:12, NCV).
"So they sent the ark of the LORD to Beth Shemesh. And the people of Beth Shemesh were harvesting their wheat in the valley, and when they looked up and saw the ark, they rejoiced at the sight" (1 Samuel 6:13, ESV).
Application
While God may use affliction to correct and refine His people, Christians can trust that He works all things together for good and offers healing and restoration through Christ.
