Temperance

Temperance is self-control and moderation in all things, reflecting a life devoted to God rather than worldly excess. Scripture calls believers to be sober-minded and disciplined in their choices.

Overview

Temperance, or self-control, is a fundamental virtue for the Christian life. It involves restraint from excess in eating, drinking, and other pursuits, and demonstrates our commitment to honor God with our bodies. The Bible presents temperance as essential for spiritual maturity and effective Christian witness.

Key Scriptures

"So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31, NIV).

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control" (Galatians 5:22-23, NIV).

"For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control" (2 Peter 1:5-6, NIV).

Application

Examine areas where you lack self-control—whether food, media, sleep, or spending—and ask the Holy Spirit to strengthen you to make choices that honor God and reflect His character in your daily decisions.
