Shallum

Shallum was a common name in biblical Israel, borne by several significant figures including a king of Israel, temple gatekeepers, and other leaders during the post-exilic period.

Overview

The name Shallum appears multiple times throughout Scripture, referring to different individuals across various periods of Israel's history. Most notably, Shallum was a king of Israel who reigned briefly during the northern kingdom's final days. Other Shallums served as gatekeepers in the temple, and still others held leadership positions during the post-exile restoration of Jerusalem.

Key Scriptures

"Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired against him [Zechariah] and struck him down at Ibleam and killed him and reigned in his place" (2 Kings 15:10, ESV). "And Shallum the son of Jabesh reigned one month" (2 Kings 15:13, ESV). "The gatekeepers: the sons of Shallum, the sons of Ater, the sons of Talmon, the sons of Akkub, the sons of Hatita, and the sons of Shobai, in all one hundred thirty-nine" (Ezra 2:42, ESV).

Application

Reflect on how biblical accounts of both faithful and unfaithful leaders challenge us to pursue godly character and integrity in our own positions of responsibility.
