Rechabites

The Rechabites were descendants of Rechab who took a Nazirite-like vow to abstain from wine, houses, and worldly pursuits, serving as a biblical example of covenant faithfulness and obedience to ancestral instruction.

Overview

The Rechabites were a nomadic clan descended from Rechab (1 Chronicles 2:55). Their founder Jonadab established strict rules requiring his descendants to drink no wine, build no houses, sow no seeds, or plant vineyards, but to live in tents (Jeremiah 35:6-7). This covenant was maintained for generations as a demonstration of loyalty to their father's commands.

Key Scriptures

"But the Rechabites said, 'We will not drink wine, for Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us, "You shall not drink wine, neither you nor your sons forever"'" (Jeremiah 35:6, ESV).

"And Jeremiah said to the house of the Rechabites, 'Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Because you have obeyed the command of Jonadab your father and kept all his precepts and done all that he commanded you, therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not lack a man to stand before me forever'" (Jeremiah 35:18-19, ESV).

Application

The Rechabites challenge believers to examine whether we honor God's Word and godly instruction with the same devoted obedience they showed toward their earthly father's covenant.
